Interesting Facts about Costco You May Not Have Known:

  •  Costco was founded in Kirkland, Washington by  James (Jim) Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman in 1983. Both had long experience in retail and had a plan to compete with the already successful Walmart owned Sams Club.
  • Costco, like most other large retailers has its own storebrand. This storebrand is called ‘Kirkland Signature’ as a nod to the very first Costco store that was ever opened.
  • To keep prices down the company finds ways to keep operating costs down too. The store does not provide grocery bags, customers must bring their own and all Costco stores are constructed with large skylight windows so that during daylight hours fewer electric lights have to be used to illuminate the stores.
  • Jeffrey Brotman is still Costco’s CEO and he also still answers his own phone!
  • In 2009 Costco stopped carrying Coca Cola products because the company refused to lower their wholesale costs to Costco’s price level. After a 6 month negotiation the situation was resolved though, and lower cost Coke products are back on the shelves again at Costco.
  • Although Sam’s Club has more stores in the US Costco has a higher sales volume.
  • Sams Club and Costco have been in serious competition right from the start. Famously Costco won the first ‘battle’ when they secured a takeover of a number of similar stores – called Price Club – over Walmart who had been trying to negotiate a similar deal.
  • Product placement in the movies has become common these days but it was taken to a new level in 2012 when the whole premise of the movie ‘The Watch’ (which starred Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill) was based around an alien invasion taking place at a Costco store. Oddly enough though a disused BJ’s Warehouse store (another Costco competitor) in Georgia was transformed in a Costco rather than using a real life Costco store!
